The "Sports Fund for Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons" in India is a national welfare initiative that provides lifelong monthly financial assistance  to retired Indian athletes who have brought glory to the nation at the highest levels of international sport like the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships. The scheme ensures that athletes who have dedicated their lives to representing India continue to receive support and recognition even after their sporting career concludes.  

Who Is Eligible? 

To qualify for the pension, an athlete must: 

  • Be retired from active sports, and 
  • Have won a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal in any of the following prestigious international events: 
  • Olympic Games 
  • Paralympic Games 
  • World Cup 
  • World Championships 
  • Asian Games 
  • Commonwealth Games 

This ensures that only athletes who have achieved excellence at the highest competitive levels receive the benefit. 

Pension Benefits 

Eligible sportspersons receive a monthly pension ranging from ₹12,000 to ₹20,000, depending on the level of achievement. The pension becomes payable: 

  • After the athlete reaches the age of 30, or 
  • Upon retirement from active sport, whichever is later. 

This long-term support acknowledges the years of dedication, discipline, and sacrifice made by India’s top athletes.

The scheme aims to: 

  • Provide financial security to retired athletes 
  • Recognize and honor their contribution to Indian sports 
  • Ensure dignified living conditions for sportspersons after their competitive careers 
  • Encourage future generations to pursue sports with confidence
