The scheme "Free Education for Sports Medal Winners / Participants of National/ International Events", introduced by the University Grants Commission, Ministry of Education, aims to support medal-winning sportspersons pursuing higher education. This initiative encourages athletes to excel both in academics and sports by removing financial barriers to education.

The scheme is applicable to national medalists and international participants.

Who can get this financial assistance?

Medal winners at Olympics,

Medalist at World championships at Commonwealth, Asian, Afro-Asian games,

Medal winners at Asian Championship (excluding Asian games).

Participation in university games and medal winners at SAF games.

These categories ensure that athletes who have represented India or achieved excellence at major sporting events receive educational support.

Courses Covered Under the Scheme

Eligible athletes can receive financial assistance for a wide range of academic programs, including:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Diploma Courses
  • Postgraduate Degree
  • Ph.D. Programs
  • MBA
  • Other recognized professional courses

This broad coverage ensures that athletes can pursue the academic path best suited to their career goals.

How does the Scheme Work.

  1. Reimbursement by UGC Financial assistance, based on the athlete’s eligibility, is reimbursed directly by the University Grants Commission to the respective universities. The university is responsible for submitting all required documents as per the scheme’s guidelines and prescribed formats.
  1. Academic Support for Athletes Recognizing that athletes may miss classes due to training and competitions, universities are required to make special academic arrangements. This includes support for completing the syllabus and meeting attendance requirements.
